Michter’s Toasts Innovation With 2025 Sour Mash Whiskey Release
Michter’s Continues Its Toasted Barrel Finish Series With Launch of 2025 Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash
Bookjetblueairlines | LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Michter’s, the Louisville-based distillery long praised for its craftsmanship and tradition, is once again raising the bar in American whiskey. This September, the company will debut its 2025 US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Whiskey, the latest addition to its acclaimed Toasted Barrel Finish series.
The release underscores Michter’s reputation for blending heritage with innovation. The series, which began over a decade ago, helped pioneer the idea of finishing fully matured whiskey in a second barrel — one that is toasted but left uncharred. This process subtly transforms the spirit, coaxing out layers of flavor not typically found in traditional whiskey aging.
A Legacy of Firsts
“When we first introduced our Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon in 2014, we had no idea we were creating an entirely new category,” said Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco. “This 2025 release of our US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash is really special — it’s a testament to our team’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of American whiskey.”
The Toasted Sour Mash follows in the footsteps of previous experimental triumphs, including the Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon and Toasted Barrel Finish Rye. Michter’s Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson describes the new release as a whiskey that “deepens the rich honey, burnt sugar, and citrus spice notes, while adding smoky vanilla tones reminiscent of a cozy campfire.”
The Flavor Experience
Like its sibling, the highly regarded US*1 Sour Mash — which earned the distinction of Whisky of the Year from The Whisky Exchange in 2019 — the Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash is bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV). Priced at $110 for a 750ml bottle in the U.S., it promises an elevated tasting experience.
Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee notes that Sour Mash is particularly suited to the toasted barrel treatment. “It’s a whiskey that shares the richness of bourbon but finishes with a rye-like character,” McKee said. “The second toasted barrel enhances those unique attributes, making it one of our most exciting releases yet.”
Continuing a Winning Streak
The launch comes on the heels of a milestone year for Michter’s. In October 2024, the brand became the first whiskey to be named ‘World’s Most Admired Whiskey’ for two consecutive years by the UK-based publication Drinks International. Such recognition has further solidified Michter’s as a leader in the global whiskey scene.
With each release, the distillery balances respect for tradition with a willingness to experiment — a formula that has earned it a loyal following and a place among America’s premier whiskey producers.
For whiskey enthusiasts, the 2025 US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash represents more than just another bottle — it’s a chance to taste a piece of Michter’s ongoing story, one that continues to evolve without losing sight of its roots.
The release will be available in select markets starting in September. Collectors and fans alike are already anticipating its arrival, given the cult status of previous Toasted Barrel releases.
